We now have a complete list of NCELTR CSWE tasks. Could those responsible for CSWE files please obtain a copy from me and we can stick them onto the existing files.

We were very sad to hear that Rod Healey had passed away on Thursday from a heart attack. Not many of you would have known him but Rod worked at Swan TAFE Balga for many years as a “Mr Fixit” and he helped us out on numerous occasions when things broke down or needed repairs. Only 10 days ago he called into the office to say farewell, as he was about to embark on an exciting new venture- selling his house and moving up to Karratha with his wife to begin work as a trades lecturer. Our sympathy goes to his wife and son.

NEAS, which is the accreditation body for the AMEP Program throughout Australia, has altered the qualification requirements for lecturing staff. This will have an impact on several staff in AMES. The minimum requirement is now a degree or a teaching qualification and CELTA. Casual lecturers already studying for the Grad Dip at Edith Cowan will have to decide whether to complete it if they already hold CELTA.

Worthwhile Project

Having referred you yesterday to the city blog for Philip’s info to date, I would still like to encourage staff to consider one project in particular, “creating simple videos and how to get students to access them.” It would give us an opportunity to create short videos filmed in our centre and local area which we could then put online.

From Sonia: "Just to let you know that I received a text message from Mary A, from NZ. She and Paul are really enjoying the scenery, so much so, they were planning a 20 km walk through Able Tasman National Park!!She sends a hello to all the staff. Congrats to Veronica and a big hug to Anna."

PD matters

Yes I can now post to this as well. If anything is relevant on the City blog to you, please get back to me asap. You can email me or just click on "COMMENTS" below.

I told Andrew that I intend coming to Balga next Wed (28th) and am willing to answer any questions you have about anything I can answer. Here in the City I have a "clinic" on Tuesdays where we have dealt with a range of issues (e.g mailmerging in Word, uploading photos, burning CDs, looking at ESL programs &c) and Cathy went to Freo yesterday to do the same thing. So it would be a good idea if you could indicate (A) if you have a query (B) what the query is about. In the City, we have half hour appointments so let me know if, when and what you want on an individual or group basis.

By the way, if you do want to look at those video exercises mentioned below, you may need RealPlayer. When you get to the Real page (illustrated), make sure you click on the Free RealPlayer link at top right in teeny-weeny writing. Otherwise it'll want your CC details.

Finally, to Veronica and her fiance, congratulations. Click Here

Philip signs in as guest

Veronica has suggested that teachers may like to send their new students to her for a tour of the ILC, so that they have an idea of how it works before their class comes in en masse. Please see her to make arrangements.

I was about to post quite a lot of information that has come through from Philip recently but having looked at the city blog I realised that it would be duplicating what he had already put there. I have therefore permitted him as from today to log into our blog as a guest so that info can come to us direct. To catch up on items which he has posted recently, go to http://amescity.blogspot.com/ (note: this address has been corrected since yesterday). For example, there is info about a resource of free ESL videoclips which you can download easily from the internet (a sort of ESL youtube) There are supporting worksheets too. The address is http://www.real-english.com/reo/index.html There’s also a posting about flu jabs (deadline today!) and new resources we can borrow, including a DVD of teachers in action in Victoria which some of you saw at PD and were keen to see again.

New VILC password is dingo (thanks for pic, Philip).
Anna is now home and will have a break of two weeks before starting on a course of chemo. She thanks everyone at Balga very much for the flowers which, together with those from others, made her room at the Mount nice and cheerful.

In other staff news we’re all delighted to hear that Veronica is engaged! Not many of us were fortunate enough to be proposed to in Paris but James is obviously a true romantic. Veronica was clearly still on cloud nine when she managed to travel home from Los Angeles last Sunday and turn up for work looking bright and cheerful on Monday! Veterans of AMES might like to recall when our last engagement occurred.

Chris is recovering from his operation and will hopefully be back on Monday 26th. Many thanks to Romana and Barbara for filling in so well.

Have not had word of Mary and Paul’s New Zealand travels- as usual the postcard will probably arrive when she does.

Katy Johnson relief Available until 8 March then away until 29 March. Here for April then o/seas from 1 May until 5 July. Her mobile is 0411430533

Smartrider
Note that our students are not technically “students” as we do not have a formal agreement with Transperth. Therefore both concession holders AND non concession holders will need to provide a password. After the initial rush Dubravka will be responsible for helping students with Smartrider applications. She will still retain the Ambulance Form portfolio.

Please make sure that you identify students in your class who have come to you without completing the previous certificate. It’s difficult to judge how many there will be in total but Christine (Cert 3 classes) and Alison (Cert 1 and 2 classes) will be doing the “gap-filling”. This involves both preparation and later testing. If they are swamped with customers then we will look at the ILC assisting as well.

Philip will be coming on Wednesday 28th from 11 am to 1 pm. Any issues you wish to discuss and, if time, anyone who wants to learn how to set up a blog?

The Refugee Council of Australia publishes a very interesting bulletin. It covers many issues, for example changes to Government policy such as the reduction in quota of refugees from Africa, all relevant press releases etc. For example, did you know that … it costs $ 2 million dollars a month to detain 8 people on Nauru? ….it costs $3 million per year to maintain the empty detention centre on Manus Island ….the cost of the Christmas Island detention centre has blown out to $ 396 million , that is $ 1 million for every refugee it will hold? You can receive the bulletin by sending an email to info@refugeecouncil.org.au

This has been a bad week for us all at Balga, with the news that Anna Phelps is to undergo a serious operation today. She will be in the Mount hospital for 4 or 5 days and will then have to undergo radiotherapy and chemotherapy for some time. Our thoughts are with her and her young family. Today and tomorrow we will be collecting contributions for some flowers.

The Smartrider forms have arrived and students can start applying.
Basically, health care card holders and pensioners need to fill in only the brown form. How many hours they study is irrelevant. Others have to fill in both the brown and green forms and they must be studying for a minimum of 12 hours. The green form has to be endorsed by us (in the office).

The Smartrider DVD is doing the rounds of afternoon classes. Morning teachers should have a look at it and decide whether to show it to their classes.

A warning about the mail system in the office. There are TWO mailbags, one for internal mail and one for Australia Post mail. Please make sure you use the correct bag and address Australia Post mail fully. If in doubt ask the office staff.

Mary Aitken leaves tomorrow for a trip to South Island NZ. We’re all envious and wish her and Paul well. With Anna and Mary away and 20 teachers in the centre we will need to take particular care with checking books in and out and also with the CSWE files. Fortunately Samantha will be coming in on Thursdays to help out but we will still be short-staffed.

Philip has set aside some time every fortnight for a visit to Balga. As Philip says, “you can ask for advice or assistance for any PD related problems that you may have ( and that I am able to answer)”. We’re not sure whether to set up a booking system or to run things on an ad hoc basis but he will be here on either side of 12 pm so that am and pm teachers can see him.

The city have now set up a blog of their own and there will no doubt be items of interest for us too. The address is http://amescity.blogspot.com Adriaan Loosjes has also put up a web site for community teachers but it requires a password so anyone who wants to view it can let me know and I’ll obtain permission from Adriaan.

Working with Children Legislation. This is on hold for now, while the College investigates a possible exemption for AMES because we have no students under 18 years of age.
