Our camel safari to the edge of the desert dunes (Nth West) went really well. It was so blissfully still out there after the hustle bustle etc etc everywhere else, We had to check our shoes in the morning to check that there weren't any scorpion campers. We are in Bikaner, and due to renovations to our modest hotel have been upgraded to the local Maharajah's palace converted to a hotel. Rather posh, but the small hotels are more friendly!
We saw the famous rat temple last evening. Thank God for the rabies shots!!!
I had a wonderful Indian massage yesterday, which is wonderful antidote to the heat, dust, cow pats etc, etc! Quite a lot of oil, feel skin needed it!
Another lovely fort today. Later this afternoon we have a 12 hour train journey, followed by 4 hour bus ride. Reward at other end is the cool hill station of Shimlar, where we have 2 nights. Got back from Rat temple in dust storm last night, and realised we were off on our long treck to Himachel Pradesh. At least it should be cooler. Could do with some ex English hill station relaxation!!!!
Some days back we were in Pushkar, a Holy City near the desert in Rajasthan. We stayed at an ex Maharajah's fort/castle the night before last. Incredible to think of the history in these places... if only the walls could talk! It is very hot in Rajathan, so we all enjoyed our evening banquet in the inner lawned courtyard of the fort. We dressed up in traditional Indian women's finery for the evening, and saw a Rajesthany puppet show for entertainment.
The variety of palaces is endless. So far the Taj Mahal is my favourite, although nyothers come very close. The two palaces in Jaipur were very majestic and beautiful. One was perched on the top of a mountain with walls and watch towers snaking along the surrounding montain ridges. In Jaipur, within the totally pink (terracotta) walled city, there was another palace. The architecture and painted murals are quite breath taking, although many need ongoing maintenance.
The traffic really is amazing. There's something to be said for individual responsibility regarding safety and protection of cars. We haven't experienced any bad traffic jams or witnessed any bad accidents, and although the traffic is slow, it is contantly weaving and orderly in it's own way.

Here in Rajasthan they are experiencing a 7 year drought. Many cities have been built aound lakes, but often they're just dry crusty expanses. In the holy city of Pushka, there was still water in the lake, but it resembled green pea soup. Another girl on the tour and I took part in a Hindu ceremony to bless our lives and the lives of our family and friends. We weren't required to do any dipping in the water thank God, but had to wash our hands, and then put droplets of the water on our heads, eyes (in my case my glasses), ears and heart. Tried not to think of the colour and consistency of the water..
